Wind Damage Reported In Doral During Afternoon Storm
DORAL (CBSMiami) – Powerful storms that pushed through South Florida Thursday left Miami-Dade county battered.
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF0 tornado touched down two miles west of Miami International Airport and traveled only about 10 yards. Severe weather caused the airport to shut down for some time, delaying dozens of flights. No major damage was reported.
Miami-Dade Fire rescue responded to a funnel cloud formed in a parking lot at NW 2nd Avenue and 14th Street in Doral. Surveillance video just before 3 p.m. showed the wind tossing around a dumpster. Witnesses said high winds from the funnel cloud caused dumpsters and branches to fly all around the parking lot, damaging a few cars. No injuries were reported.
Nearby, at 87th Avenue and 8th Street, a downed pine tree blocked traffic for several hours. The tree hit power lines and caused an outage for several dozen customers.
Several streets in Medley became impassable from torrential rain that left a flooded mess. Several cars stalled and had to be towed away.
In Hialeah, the downpour also soaked streets. On 8th Avenue just north of 49th cars crawled through deep flood water just before rush hour.
"Flooding, flooding it's horrible," said driver Migdalia Mejides. "It was like crossing a river. It's horrible."
Flooding on Miami Beach cut Alton Road down to one lane in some spots. A water spout was also spotted in the area.
