After Midnight 'Don't Get On The Road': Gov. Scott Tells South Floridians

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Florida Governor Rick Scott was using the last hours to urge South Floridian seek proper shelter as Hurricane Irma moves closer.
"If you're not on the road by midnight, don't get on the road," said Governor Scott to those in South Florida.
Due to a westward shift in Irma's projected path, Governor Scott earlier urged residents in the Gulf Coast evacuation zones to get out as well.
"We are running out of time. The storm is almost here," said Governor Scott. "This is a catastrophic storm the state has never seen before."
The governor said this should be the day you do the "right thing for your family and go inland."
During a news conference on Friday afternoon in Lee County in southwest Florida, Scott warned of storm surge which could be between 6 and 12 feet.
"You are not going to survive this if it happens," Scott told residents. "Now is the time to evacuate."
While there are hurricane watches and warnings for parts of the state, the governor said everyone should prepare.
"All Floridians should be prepared to evacuate soon," said Governor Scott.

As for those evacuating, the state doing what they can to keep it running smoothly including having Department of Transportation officials monitoring traffic cameras.
"I've offered school buses to help evacuations statewide," said Gov. Scott.
The governor asked anyone who is stuck in traffic to please have patience and be mindful of others.
If you do not need to be on the road, please do not travel.

The governor asked gas stations in evacuation zones to stay open as long as possible so people can fuel up and get out.
Ports will remain open in order to bring fuel in as long as possible, the governor said.
More than 17,000 people have already volunteered but the governor said they could always use more. Those wanting tp volunteer can call 1-800-354-3571. Volunteers will be helping in the shelters and with food and supply distribution.
Governor Scott has activated the entire force of the Florida Army and Air National Guard which is about 7,000 guard members to help with planning and logistics operations. They are stationed across the state.
The Florida National Guard has coordinated with the Illinois National Guard to use aircraft to help move meals that are ready to eat.
