Wal-Mart Questions FPL Rate Hike Proposal

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) - Wal-Mart and a group of major power users have raised questions about whether proposed hikes by Florida Power & Light are justified.

The state Public Service Commission on Monday formally the intervention of Wal-Mart Stores East, LP and the Florida Industrial Power Users Group into FPL's regulatory request to increase base electricity rates.

In seeking to intervene, Wal-Mart and the group known as FIPUG filed brief petitions that indicated they dispute the proposed increases.

FPL is seeking about $1.34 billion in increases over three years, starting with an $866 million hike in 2017.

The state Office of Public Counsel, which represents consumers in utility cases, also has intervened. The Florida Industrial Power Users Group frequently takes part in rate cases and other issues at the Public Service Commission.

The News Service of Florida contributed to this report.
