Vandalism Charges Dropped Against Ex-Girlfriend Of Fmr. Miami-Dade Mayor

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Vandalism charges have been dropped against the ex-girlfriend of former Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez.

A hearing was scheduled Tuesday morning for Evelyn Fernandez - a lieutenant with the Miami-Dade Police Department. Instead, prosecutors announced that no action would be taken in the case.

Fernandez was arrested backing July, accused of breaking into Alvarez's Coral Gables apartment and causing significant damage.  She was charged with burglary and criminal mischief valued at over $1,000. At last check, Fernandez remained suspended from her job with pay.

Last week, a battery charge was dropped against Alvarez after Fernandez refused to testify against him.

Alvarez, 63, was arrested April 27th after he reportedly got into a fight with Fernandez - who he had been in a relationship with for 14 years - when she went to his condo to return his cat.

"The defendant grabbed the victim by both arms and pinned her against the wall in the building's parking garage. The defendant began spitting at the victim while he was yelling profanities at her," states the arrest affidavit.

Fernandez said the verbal and physical abuse by Alvarez escalated after he began a bodybuilding career.

As for Alvarez's battery charges, he says there's more to the story.

"There's two sides to every story. My side had never been told," said Alvarez.

Alvarez was named the director of Miami-Dade Police in 1997 and elected county mayor nine years later. However, following a raise in property taxes and the controversial plan to use public money to build Marlins Park in Little Havana, among other criticisms, he was recalled.
