MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The United States and Cuba are working together on environmental issues and signed a statement to solidify it.

Representatives for both nationals signed a joint statement Tuesday while at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.

The document lays out the framework as to how both nations will cooperate with each other when it comes to dealing with environmental issues.

They'll collaborate on issues like coastal and marine protection, the protection of biodiversity including endangered and threatened species, climate change, disaster risk reduction, and marine pollution.

Both nations have already begun cooperating on a number of projects including establishing sister marine protected areas and sharing hydrographic information.

As part of the agreement, both the U.S. and Cuba will review the joint statement again in two years to consider "possible enhancements" to it, including expanding the list of objectives.
