MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The University of Miami and Miami-Dade County Public Schools are teaming up to make concussion awareness, prevention and treatment a priority for all the student athletes in the county.

The school system is the fourth-largest in the country, with over 12,000 student athletes.

The pair is working together to catalog and treat concussions in every single public high school for every sport, per a report by CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

This is the first time that an operation of this magnitude has been seen in the entire country.

The initiative began four years ago, and just under 600 concussions have been reported and treated.

The majority of the concussions recorded have been from football players, though there are recorded cases in a dozen contact sports, including water polo and girls' soccer.
