United Way of Broward County Mission United gives out 350 meals to area veterans

MIAMI - Hundreds of veterans in Broward County drove off with everything they needed for a holiday dinner

"We got the word out through word of mouth, our community partners, through the VA, and that way we were able to get all the vets together who were in need," said James Heaton, Senior Director of United Way of Broward County Mission United.

They gave out 350 meals on Monday.

"It's a great opportunity for this organization to give back," said Joan Morgan, Director of Veteran Services at Mission United.

All the dinner boxes went to local active military, National Guard members, and veterans.

"It means we get to enjoy a good Thanksgiving this year, which is what we're looking for," said Army Veteran Albert Figueroa.

He said this is yet another way Mission United has offered support.

"They've done a fabulous job. They helped me with housing, other necessities, everyday things," he explained. "I had become homeless and so I worked with them a lot, and it's been very good."

Mission United brings together resources to help service members acclimate to civilian life, focusing on employment, education, legal assistance and housing.

All in an effort to help those who have served our country, and that service is something we can all be thankful for.
