UM Receives $25 Million Donation For Stem Cell Research

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — The Soffer family, which owns the The Fontainebleau Resorts and founded Turnberry Associates, has donated $25 million to the University of Miami's Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute.
The funding will help the institute explore new cell-based therapies in cardiology, sports medicine, and aging-related frailty.
The institute has published clinical trials that have shown the efficacy of stem cells in regenerating cardiac tissue. The institute is also expanding its research into developing stem cell treatments for infants with congenital heart disease.
A portion of the gift will also support sports medicine stem cell research at a time when an increasing number of professional athletes are looking to regenerative medicine to treat injuries.
The donation was the largest to date for the institute.
