Twofer: Marlins Beat Nats 5-4, Tie Mets 4-4

JUPITER (CBSMiami/AP) — Justin Maxwell hit a game-ending three-run homer to lift the Miami Marlins' split squad to a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals Friday.

Maxwell connected on Paolo Espino's pitch with one out in the ninth inning.

It was the second homer in as many games for Maxwell, who is bidding for a roster spot as a backup outfielder.

Nats veteran pitcher Gio Gonzalez allowed two hits in two scoreless innings in his first start of spring training.

Gonzalez struck out one and threw 17 of 27 pitches for strikes.

Washington's Wilmer Difo hit a three-run homer off Brian Ellington. Michael Taylor homered off Miami's Adam Conley.

Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart escaped serious injury when he collided with teammate Martin Prado when both were scrambling to cover third base. Cosart bruised his right knee and complained of a tight calf.

The Marlins second team took on the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie.

Marcell Ozuna had a double and two singles to improve to 5 for 5 in spring training, helping the Marlins tie the New York Mets 4-4.

Ozuna has a home run and two doubles in his first two exhibition games.

Travis d'Arnaud scored a run for the Mets and Neil Walker had a single in his Mets spring training debut after seven seasons with Pittsburgh. Mets prospect Dilson Herrera was 2 for 2, including a tying, inside-the-park homer in the ninth.

Marlins starter Justin Nicolino allowed a leadoff single by Juan Lagares, then retired six batters in order.

Mets starter Logan Verrett gave up two runs and two hits in two innings.
