PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - Two people were killed when a truck crashed into a light pole in Plantation early Thursday morning.

The fatal accident, which claimed the lives of 31-year old Patrick Michael Kallman and 37-year-old Jennifer Catherine Jacon, happened around 3 a.m. Thursday.

According to Plantation Police, the Ford truck was heading north on South Pine Island Road when it clipped the pole at Peters Road. On impact it spun around, Jacon was ejected. Kallman, who had been behind the wheel, made it out and was crawling on the ground when he was struck by a car which kept on going.

A Plantation police officer nearby heard the crash and rushed to see what had happened.

"When he got out he observed two people lying in the street," said Jeff Gordon with the Plantation Fire Department. "We responded and found a female who was dead on arrival who had apparently been ejected from the pick up truck that struck the police. We also found a male several feet north of the vehicle who was listed as a level 1 trauma alert."

Kallman was put in an ambulance and rushed to Broward Health Medical Center but he died on the way.

"The tracks of that vehicle led to where this gentleman was lying in the roadway. There was apparently a witness who mentioned something about the fact that he was struck by a second vehicle and what the police found confirmed that."

Kallman is the son of Broward Sheriff Deputy Sgt. Michael Kallman who has been with the department 30 years.

At the family's home in Davie a steady stream of mourners could be seen stopping by to offer condolences--among them Sheriff Scott Israel.

Family friend Bill Bass said everyone is devastated.

"Patrick tried to be a good guy. It's hard to take this news right now," said Bass.

At the crash scene, friends of the couple have been dropping off balloons and flowers.

Dana Shaw, a friend, is urging the driver to go to police.

"It will give closure to the family and probably to you.
Shaw said.

Police are now looking for the driver of the small white or light-colored older model car which hit Kallman. They said the car will likely have damage on the left side.
