Tracking The Tropics: Tropical Storm Beta Heads To Texas; Wilfred Churns In Atlantic, Cat. 4 Hurricane Teddy Nears Bermuda

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Tropical Storm Beta, which formed on Friday afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico, headed toward Texas on Saturday.

With the 2 p.m. Saturday advisory, Beta was about 305 miles east-southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas. It packed maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was moving northwest at 3 mph.

Beta was expected to become a Category 1 hurricane by the time it makes landfall in Texas.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Wilfred continued to churn far away from South Florida in the Tropical Atlantic.

With the 5 p.m. Saturday advisory, Wilfred was about 1,025 miles of the Cabo Verde Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph ad headed west-northwest at 14 mph.

Some slight strengthening is possible today, and weakening should start this weekend and continue into next week.

Beta is expected to become a hurricane while moving slowly over the western Gulf of Mexico during the next day or so. Residents of Texas and northeastern Mexico are advised to keep an eye on this storm.

The first, Subtropical Storm Alpha, formed off Portugal Friday afternoon. 

Then there's Hurricane Teddy, a powerful Category 4 hurricane nearing Bermuda. It'll make its closest approach to the island late Sunday or Monday. Large swells produced by Teddy are expected to affect portions of the Leeward Islands, the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the southeastern U.S.
