Tropical Disturbance Has High Chance Of Development

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The tropical disturbance just north of the Virgin Islands is disorganized, but may be able to strengthen by next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system is moving toward Hispaniola and the mountainous region could limit the development in the short-term or possibly tear the system apart.

If the system survives the mountains, it is forecast to move northward toward the southeastern Bahamas over the weekend.

As it does so, meteorologists believe there is some possible strengthening that could lead to a tropical depression or even a tropical storm.

The NHC has given the system a high, 60 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone with 48-hours and an even higher chance, 80 percent, in the next five days.

If the storm were to be named, it would be called Cristobal.

Whether the storm develops or not, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected around the Leeward Islands, over Hispaniola and the southeastern Bahamas Friday night and Saturday.

A hurricane hunter aircraft may fly over the disturbance Friday afternoon.
