Sisters Ages 2 And 5 Killed In Deerfield Beach Crash That Had Part Of I-95 Shut Down
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A mother and father are devastated after their two young doughters were killed following a violent crash on I-95.
Their two-year-old daughter was killed in the crash on Sunday. Her five-year-old sister was put on life support following the accident but died Monday evening.
The two-car crash happened Sunday in Deerfield Beach and shut down the southbound lanes of I-95 just north of Sample Road.
Investigators said there were no child restraint car seats in the Toyota Corolla the children were in. They also don't know if the children had seat belts on.
The toddler has been identified as Akeena Avanel Bennett and her five-year-old sister as Keanna Ariel Bennett.
The children's mother Annette Bennet said it was the children's godmother, Rashida Raby, who was driving the girls to a church service in Fort Lauderdale when the crash happened.
Bennett and her husband were out of town when they learned of the crash and flew back to South Florida immediately.
"Everybody is calling me but I can't answer everybody, I'm just asking you guys to keep us in your prayers," said a tearful Bennett in a video she posted on her Facebook page. "Both of my kids, both of my kids are gone, my two babies are gone."
Both Raby, 34, and the driver of the other car, 26-year-old Zachary Schot from Virginia, were transported to the hospital.
Raby was released from Broward Health Medical Center.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Bennett pay for expenses.
