Three BSO Cars Hit In Early Morning Chase
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A man out of jail on bond reportedly led Broward Sheriff's deputies on a wild chase early Wednesday morning.
The sheriff's office said around 3 a.m. they got a call from an Oakland Park resident who said her car alarm was going off. A sergeant with department headed to check it out saw a Chevy Malibu with dark tinted windows speeding away from the area.
The Malibu sped onto I-95 north and in Deerfield Beach rammed a deputy's vehicle. The driver then exited the highway and hit two other BSO vehicles before coming to a stop near the Deerfield Palms condos the 1300 block of Dixie Highway.
Police who live in the area heard the commotion.
"There was a very loud boom," said Cleo Munoz.
The sheriff's office said the driver, who they identified as 26-year old Derek Fuller, bailed out of the car, ran through a relative's apartment, over a barbed-wire fence and into a field.
Cleo Munoz said she heard someone running and yelling through the complex and that a of officer, along with a dog, were running after him.
"I saw the polices coming, a lot of polices coming and talk to him, come on inside," said Munoz.
Using a helicopter and K-9s, deputies tracked him down and took him into custody. Fuller was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for a dog bite before going to jail.
A man who said he was Fuller's brother said the sheriff's officer version story is not how it happened.
"Essentially he collided with the two police cars over there and then ran to a relative's house. Are you guys the relative," asked CBS4's Ted Scouten.
"Aw, no, no, he didn't do that," said the man.
Two of the deputies he rammed were transported to Broward Health North Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The sergeant who was also hit was not injured.
Fuller faces multiple charges including three counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding and possession of cocaine.
