Threat Forces Evacuation Of Parkway Middle In Lauderhill

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Not you typical morning for students at Parkway Middle School in Lauderhill.

They were evacuated from their school at 3600 NW 6th Court just after the day had begun because of a perceived threat.

"The information that was passed along to our school resource officer to his skills, and his experience, he believed it to be a very credible threat. Based on that information we went ahead and evacuated the school," said police Lt. Gregory Solowsky. "The specifics on why we believe it to be credible, at this point we are not quite ready to release it only because it is part of an active investigation."

The students were held at a nearby athletic field until police could check out the threat.

"They just told us to get our belongings and leave off campus to come here," said Akelia Barkley.

Students at nearby Broward Estates Elementary School were also evacuated as a precaution.

Parents were notified and given the option of taking their kids home, some did.

Some of the students called or sent texts to their parents to let them know what was happening.

"They called me to say bring us some water. So I came out here and they told me just to sign them out," said one concerned mother.

Police said the have a lead on who made the threat.

"I can say that we do have a person of interest that is speaking with out detectives at this point. It is a juvenile and that is pretty much all that we can release at this time," said Solowsky.

Police said Wednesday incident was not related to prior threats received by the school.
