The Navy's Most Advanced Warship Is Here

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- The U.S. Navy's newest and most tech-advanced warship was off the coast of Fort Lauderdale Thursday afternoon.

The USS Zumwalt is part of their next generation destroyers made to strengthen their naval power.

According to the Navy, the surface ship is capable of performing critical missions with its latest war fighting technology and weaponry.

Chopper4 was over the water as the destroyer was near Port Everglades around 3 p.m.

Port Everglades spokesperson Ellen Kennedy said the submarine was running exercises.

The USS Zumwalt is named after Adm. Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt Jr., a former naval chief and veteran of World War II and the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.

According to the Navy, the USS Zumwalt is expected to be integrated into the fleet in 2018 after a number of tests and evaluations.
