MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Movie theaters struck back this weekend with the release of one of the most anticipated films of all-time.

Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens earned a record-breaking $238 million in domestic ticket sales, making it the biggest opening weekend in U.S. history.

That beats the previous record holder, Jurassic World, which earned $209 million in its opening weekend this past summer.

To put things into perspective, the #1 highest-grossing movie of all-time, Avatar, took in just $77 million during its opening weekend, yet went on to total $760 million domestically and about $3 billion worldwide.

Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip came in second this weekend with an estimate $14.4 million in ticket sales. Third place went to Sisters, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, making about $13.4 million.
