SWEDEN (CBSMiami) – In one of the most bizarre sports stories in recent history, a Swedish soccer player was given a red card for farting during a game.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Already with a yellow card looming over him, Adam Lindin Ljungkvist, a left back for Järna SK in the Swedish Football Association, received a second yellow card late in his game on Wednesday for passing gas.

Referee Dany Kako heard Ljungkvist break wind and quickly concluded that it was in violation of the rules.

"I perceived it as deliberate provocation," Kako said, per The Guardian. "He did it on purpose and it was inappropriate. Therefore, he received a yellow card."

Ljungkvist strongly denies that there was anything intentional about the fart and pled his case after the match.

"I had a bad stomach, so I simply let go," the 25-year-old told Länstidningen Södertälje, a Swedish newspaper. "Then I received two yellow cards and then red. Yes, I was shocked, it's the strangest thing I have ever experienced in football.

"I asked the referee, 'What, am I not allowed to break wind a little?' 'No,' he replied … I don't get it but maybe he thought I farted in my hand and threw the fart at him. But I did not."

Kristoffer Linde, a striker on opposing team Pershagen SK, was taken back by the whole situation.

"I was standing a good distance away but I heard the fart loud and clear," Linde said. "It's the strangest thing I've seen on a pitch, and I've been playing football since I was eight years old."

This isn't the first time that Kako has handled a situation like this.

"Once there was a player who stood and peed next to the pitch," he explained. "I showed him a yellow card, too."
