SUNRISE (CBSMiami) -- Sunrise Police are investigating a domestic disturbance at a home where they say an officer was forced to open fire.
The gunshot struck 49-year-old Victor Manuel Maldonado, whom police say was threatening his wife with a weapon.
It was just before midnight Thursday when Sunrise Police went to the two-story home at 274 S.W. 159th Avenue after getting a 911 call about the domestic disturbance.
"The husband was armed with a knife, holding the knife to the wife's neck," said Officer Chris Piper. "One officer gave repeated demands to drop the knife and discharged his firearm one time."
The bullet hit Maldonado, who was rushed to the hospital. Rescue also took the woman to another hospital.
The neighborhood is a quiet one. By Friday morning, people were surprised to see crime scene tape cordoning off their homes as the police crime scene unit parked in the middle of the street and took over the area.
"We were wondering what was happening," neighbor Maximo Del Lupo told CBS4's Donna Rapado. "But we didn't know anything. We didn't hear any noises."
Others didn't realize what happened until seeing it on their television.
"We turned on the news this morning," Gina Viera told Rapado. "We didn't know that it was happening right outside our front door until we saw our address. We walked outside and we saw the cops. We had no idea anything went on."
Little is known about the couple. Neighbors said the family moved in recently.
"I see them sometimes on Saturdays walking here with the babies and playing," said Del Lupo.
Police also said the couple has a history of domestic violence in New York. Their two children were in the home when police arrived.
Detectives removed the children safely. Police said Maldonado is in stable condition at Broward Health Medical Center. His wife was also expected to be okay.
Maldonado was charged with Attempted Murder, two counts of Kidnapping, False Imprisonment, Armed Sexual Battery and Unlawful Transmission of HIV.
