Subway Changing Ingredients In Breads

NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – The popular fast-food chain Subway said Friday it will remove a chemical from its bread to help improve recipes. The chemical, azodicronamide, was targeted by an online petition launched this week.

The blog, FoodBabe.com, targeted Subway for suing the chemical which it said is used by Subway as a "bleaching agent" is also used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber. The petition launched by FoodBabe.com noted Subway doesn't use the product in other parts of the world.

After the petition picked up momentum this week, Subway's Facebook page was filled with comments regarding the chemical. Subway said removing the chemical was already underway when the petition launched, but declined to say when it started or when the chemical removal would be completed.

Subway isn't the first restaurant chain/food provider to be targeted over its ingredients. Last year, Pepsi agreed to remove an ingredient from Gatorade that had been linked to a flame retardant.
