Stereotype May Have Played Role In Rabbi Murder

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Police continue to look for the killers of a beloved rabbi, gunned down in Northeast Miami-Dade in broad daylight.

Rabbi Joseph Raksin was shot and killed Saturday as he walked to synagogue in his religious attire.

There was an outpouring of grief in New York city on Monday. It was where Raksin lived.

Police can't be certain if it was a robbery gone bad or possibly a hate crime.

The Anti-Defamation League of Florida spoke to CBS4's Gary Nelson.

"We try to fight stereotypes in general. In this case, the people have not been caught.  There was a major disregard for human life and we have no idea what was in their hearts and in their minds," said Hava Holzhauer of the Anti-Defamation League of Florida.

On Monday and Tuesday, police continued to flood the neighborhood where the murder took place.

Residents are on edge due to the incident.

"People are saying you gotta protect your wife and kids," said concerned resident Yona Lunger.

"Everybody's scared to walk... since the murder of the rabbi. It's a really upsetting situation," said resident Marcelle Knafo.

No arrests have been made.

The community has offered a 50,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction in this case.
