State's High Court Declines To Hear Police Labor Dispute

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - The Florida Supreme Court has decided against hearing an appeal by Miami-Dade County in a legal battle with a police union about allegations of unfair labor practices.

The 1st District Court of Appeal in February ruled in favor of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association in the dispute, which stemmed from a 2012 decision by Mayor Carlos Gimenez to veto an agreement that had been approved by county commissioners to resolve an impasse with the union.

Gimenez wanted union members to make additional contributions to health-care costs, but the appeals court agreed with the union's argument that state law did not allow the mayor to veto the commission's resolution of the impasse.
The county in May asked the Supreme Court to take up the case, but justices issued a brief order Tuesday declining the county's request. As is common, the Supreme Court did not detail its reasons for the decision.
