Carjacking suspect barricaded in vehicle along I-95 taken into custody
MIAMI - An overnight carjacking, police chase, and crash led to the shutdown of southbound I-95 from Ives Dairy Road to the Golden Glades for hours on Tuesday morning.
According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, just before midnight on Monday, a man carjacked a woman he knew at gunpoint in the 2700 block of South State Road 7 in West Park.
An alert was issued over the police radio. Once the vehicle was spotted, the sheriff's office said there was a pursuit that extended into Miami-Dade, and Miami-Dade police became involved.
According to investigators, shortly before 3 a.m. on Tuesday, the vehicle crashed on the I-95 off-ramp to Miami Gardens Drive. The driver then barricaded himself inside and refused to come out.
That ramp was closed as was the on-ramp at Miami Gardens Drive and the on-ramp from Ives Dairy Road.
Southbound traffic was diverted off the highway at Ives Dairy Road. The traffic backup extended to Sheridan Street.
Shortly before 9 a.m., the man was taken into custody. The roads and ramps were then re-opened,
