South Florida Families Affected By Fighting Abroad

MIAMI (CBSMiami)- A South Florida high school students captured tense moments in Israel when they were heading for shelter after air raid sirens started sounding.

Donna Salzman's daughter Lindsay is the one who filmed the whole thing.

Linsday and her twin brother Sam are in Israel for a few weeks this summer as part of a school program but their experience has been impacted by the fighting between Israel and Hamas.

"When I started watching the news, I started getting very uptight," said Salzman.

She admits that at first she was anxious about her kids' safety but then she spoke to them.

"The best thing I did for myself is speak to my children and listen to their voices. They're calm and they're happy and they keep reiterating how safe they feel," said Salzman.

Salzman also showed CBS4 the video which shows one of the kids in the program singing in the bomb shelter.

She said her children, especially Lindsay, is coming to terms with life during hostilities and those who do not have the protections she does.

"She's more upset for people that don't have these shelters to run to ..or don't have that amount of time," said Salzman.

They are not the only ones affected by the fighting.

Louis Reinstein of Plantation is supposed to fly to Israel with his wife and kids on Thursday but with the Federal Aviation Administration's prohibition on flights to Tel Aviv, after rocket fire there, his plans are up in the air.

Ironically, Reinstein said he is a graduate of the same high school program that the Salzman's are in.
He said his nephew is in the program this summer.

He hopes flights resume on Thursday so his family can have their annual vacation in Israel.
