Public storage facility fire under investigation in Miami Gardens

MIAMI - Firefighters battled a smoky fire at a public storage facility in Miami Gardens early Tuesday morning.

Chopper4 over the scene at 3505 NW 167th Street spotted thick smoke coming from more than half a dozen units. Flames were shooting through the roofs of several of the units.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, they received word of the fire just after 5:30 a.m. When fire crews arrived they found a light haze and fire coming from the rear of the facility.

Crews immediately attacked the fire which spread to multiple storage units.

"The firefight became complicated due to the layout of where the fire actually broke out and, of course, as you can imagine public storage units are stuffed with all kinds of flammable and combustibles and all kinds of materials, everything that can legally be stored is stored in there," said Deputy Fire Chief Danny Cardeso.

Firefighters attacked the flames from the roof and ground, they utilized hydraulic tools to access some of the storage units.

More than 30 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were called to the scene to help.

The storage facility is near the Palmetto Expressway. At one point, police blocked the NW 37th Avenue exit from the highway as firefighters tried to contain the flames.

Around 7:30 a.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said they were able to stop the spread of the fire and conditions were improving. By 9 a.m. the fire was mostly out and firefighters were checking for any hot spots that could flare up.

There are no reported injuries.
