Sinkhole Swallows Part Of Fort Lauderdale Road

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Now that's a little bigger than your average pothole.
Early Monday morning a sinkhole formed on a side street near Davie Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale.
Rick Johnson, with the city's Public Works dept., said the hole was caused by a six-inch water main which broke. The main fed a nearby fire hydrant.
Thankfully, all the water flowed down into a storm water drain and did not affect any roads. He added that the water supply to surrounding businesses and homes was not affected.
The rushing water, which washed away the soil under the road, caused a hole the size of a large panel truck and about six feet deep.
Johnson said they should have the pipe repaired by Monday afternoon. The road will be repaired and resurfaced, and then re-opened to traffic by late Tuesday, possibly early Wednesday.
