Sinkhole Swallows Car In Lauderhill

LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) – A parked car landed in a watery mess early Monday morning when a sinkhole opened up near the vehicle.

According to investigators with the Broward Sheriff's Office, the female driver of a white, Chevy truck struck a pedestrian just after 6:00 a.m. in the 4700 block of NW 24th Court in Lauderdale Lakes and fled the scene.

Sheriff's detectives said the truck was then reported driving erratically and crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree at Northwest 49th Avenue and 22nd Street.

A car parked nearby became partially submerged in a sinkhole caused by the crash into the fire hydrant.

"I saw my car in this dilemma.  Water all over, bubbling, my car down," said Diane Duchesne, the car's owner.  "By the time I got outside, the water was just around it, just bubbling around it, just sinking and sinking, sinking.  And now, it's really sank."

Investigators suspect the hit-and-run driver had been drinking.

"If the person was drinking, I really think that was an irresponsible person.  She could have hit so many things more, an individual walking, and children.  This is when they're getting ready to go to school.  We're lucky she didn't hit a school bus," said Barbara Johnson, a resident of the community.

Broward Sheriff's Office investigators are working to learn more about circumstances leading up to the crash.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with leg injuries and the driver of the truck, Ivanka Cancic, was taken into custody.
