Shelters Anticipate To House More Due To Cold

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With South Florida temperatures forecasted to drop even further Thursday night, shelters are ready and open, expecting more people than usual.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for all of South Florida tonight. Chills are expected to drop into the upper 20s and low 30s.

Centers in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano Beach are expecting to house more than 100 additional homeless during the cold snap.

Starting Thursday, and lasting until the cold weather has passed, the Miami Rescue Mission, and the Broward Outreach Centers in Hollywood and Pompano are anticipating more people than usual.

"On nights where it is unusually cold, we can expect to see an additional 30-40 people per campus in both Hollywood and Pompano in addition to those who use our overnight programs," James Whitworth, Director of Operations at Miami Rescue Mission/Broward Outreach Centers said.

The Salvation Army also has cold weather emergency shelter and pickup locations during Broward's cold weather emergency.

Community members in need of safety and shelter are encouraged to arrive at The Salvation Army, 1445 W. Broward Blvd, by 6:30 p.m.
