MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) -- It's sentencing day for an elderly Florida man who was on the run for 37 years.

U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke on Monday found  82-year-old Robert Anton Woodring mentally incompetent.

The judge ordered treatment at a prison hospital for Woodring, who jumped bail in 1977. Woodring's attorney told the South Florida Sun Sentinel  that he is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Prosecutors say Woodring failed to surrender for a seven-year prison sentence for fraud and for a related conviction involving an attempt to flee in his 60-foot yacht so officials couldn't seize it. The bail-jumping conviction carries another 1-year prison term.

U.S. Marshals caught Woodring in Guadalajara, Mexico, in December 2014 after getting a tip while searching for another fugitive. Mexican officials sent him back to the U.S.
