FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Traffic along a stretch of State Road A1A in Ft. Lauderdale is being diverted due to a water main break.

The road is closed in both directions north of Sunrise Boulevard as crews work to repair the line that ruptured at 1151 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard.

For some residents in the area, the problem is two-fold. Not only is the road closed, but their water has been turned off so crews can make repairs.

The break happened just after 6 a.m. City crews managed to shut off some valves so most people in the area would have water. Unfortunately, the water had to be shut off for the Park Tower, a condo closest to the break.

The repair of the main is a bit of a challenge since it is attached to the
roof of an underground beach access tunnel.

Residents of Park Tower said it's been a big inconvenience.

"It's gigantic of course," said Mike Epps. "We can't go north on A1A and haven't been able to since the water main broke. Fortunately they are letting people come up to our parking lot because we have service people and concrete work being done and that sort of thing."

The city is asking drivers to avoid the area until the repair is complete.

This is not the first this stretch of road has problems.

The road and sidewalk from NE 14th Court to NE 18th Street, just north of Sunrise Boulevard, began to crack and crumble in 2012 due to seasonal high tides and the pounding surf caused by the passing of Hurricane Sandy. The seawall was completely destroyed.

More than 500 pieces of sheet metal were used to form a new seawall and 27,000 tons of sand was spread to replenish the beach.
