Second Bike Death In 4 Days Reported In Florida Keys

KEY WEST (CBSMiami) -- Authorities have reported the second bike death within four days in the Florida Keys.

This is the Keys' 20th traffic fatality of the year,  according to our news partners the Miami Herald.

Florida Highway Patrol said the 55-year old Washington, P.A. man died Wednesday after a crash in Tavernier.

The man - whose name had not been released at last check - was riding a 2015 Harley Davidson heading South on the outside lane around 4 p.m. near mile marker 92 of U.S. 1 .

Meantime, Michael Elam, 44, was heading South but on the outside lane wit ha 2002  Ford van. He tried to make a left but ended up colliding with the cyclist who did not have time to brake.

The rider - who was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash - was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Troopers said no alcohol was involved in the crash.

The rider's death comes days after another person died while riding their bike on Big Pine Key.
