ORLANDO'S (CBSMiami) - The tallest, fastest, longest roller coaster in Orlando will officially open on Friday at SeaWorld Orlando.
Mako, a 200-foot-tall hypercoaster, is the centerpiece of the park's new two-acre shark-themed realm Shark Wreck Reef which also includes Shark Encounter, Sharks Underwater Grill, gift shops, and shark-and shipwreck-themed educational experiences.
"Mako and Shark Wreck Reef rewrite the definition of 'immersive' entertainment," said SeaWorld Orlando President Donnie Mills. "Our guests now have a whole new underwater world to explore — and a thrilling new ride to conquer that's literally breathtaking."
Mako, designed by Bolliger & Mabillard for airtime and speed, will accelerate to 73 mph as it whips passengers along an imposing, nearly mile-long track.
Each coaster car will be equipped with special 'fast wheels' - comprised of a special compound that reduces friction - for a smooth, relentlessly fast, ride from beginning to end. The only safety restraint on the cars will be a lap guard for the rider's lower body, so their bodies are free for added mobility and "airtime".
Its design was inspired by its namesake: Mako sharks which are known for their speed and ability to quickly change course as they pursue prey.
"For almost three exhilarating minutes, you experience life as an apex predator," said Brian Morrow, SeaWorld's Vice President of Theme Park Experience and Design. "You surge through the water at top speeds, charge to the ocean depths and chase prey throughout a massive reef."
SeaWorld Orlando got into the roller coaster game in 2000 with Kraken which stands 149 feet tall and hits a top speed of 65 mph. It's Orlando's only floorless coaster. In 2009, guests got to soar on SeaWorld Orlando's Manta, the only flying roller coaster of its kind in the world.
