Sandbag locations set up to help residents ahead of Hurricane Ian rainfall

Communities hand out sandbags ahead of Hurricane Ian's rainfall

MIAMI - Cities across South Florida passed out sandbags on Tuesday ahead of heavy rain expected from Hurricane Ian.

In Miami Gardens public works staff shoveled sand into bags in the rain beginning at 6:30 a.m.

"You want to be prepared you don't want to get flooded or anything like that that can cause major damage so you want to make sure you're prepared," said Jermaine Joseph who came out to get sandbags after hearing from city officials.

"Just taking precautions. The city said so, I just followed," he added.

The site off of NW 183rd street and NW 12th avenue opened with a long line of cars. Some residents told CBS4 their streets flooded in the past and they are concerned about this time around.

As the work continued Miami Gardens city council member Robert Stephens showed up to thank workers and to remind everyone about finishing up their preparations now.

"I would encourage them to prepare as much as possible today by the afternoon. Stay in the house, avoid the floods. If you don't have to leave the house stay in the house and ensure that your property is protected," said Stephens.
