MIAMI (CBSMiami)-- Same-sex spouses of state employees are now eligible for state coverage for health insurance and retirement benefits.

According to our news partners The Miami Herald, a memo went out to state agency and university personnel officers and benefit coordinators. The memo came from the operations chief of the Florida Department of Management Services.

Employees whose marriages were legally recognized this week have until March 6th to enroll in a family benefit plan.

Until now, Florida state agencies and universities didn't offer insurance, retirement or other benefits to same sex spouses.
