Shelter Doors Open To Homeless As Broward County Declares Cold Weather Emergency
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – With temperatures forecast to plunge into the mid-40s during the week, Broward County has declared a multi-night cold weather emergency.
In response to the cold spell, Broward's Salvation Army opened its doors offering the homeless a warm, safe place to stay.
Doors at the shelter located at 1445 W Broward Boulevard opened Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. to any homeless person who needed a place to stay during the cold weather.
Several dozen people in need of shelter had already arrived not long after the doors opened. With the cold spell expected to continue through the end of the week, the shelter will be opening again Thursday and Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Food and hot beverages will be served.
On a normal night, the Salvation Army provides shelter for 160 people.
According to Captain Luis Viera, Area Commander, "No one will be turned away."
Viera said anyone who would like to help out can make a financial donation. Donations can be mailed to: The Salvation Army of Broward County, PO Box 230, Ft. Lauderdale, 33302. For more information call (954) 712-2431
While some residents look forward to the cold weather, others are living in South Florida simply to escape the chill.
"I don't like it. I like nice hot weather. That's why I live here," said Ginger Bristol.
"Put on an extra jacket, stay in," said Eleanor King.
It is important to remember when trying to keep warm, like when using space heaters to keep away from kids and at least three feet away from anything that can catch fire.
Some visitors seeking refuge in South Florida's hot sun are left coming up with a plan b.
"Obviously dress warmer. A lot of shopping I'm sure. Stuff like that. Can't really be out as much by the pool and by the beach," said Eishara Campbell.
