Residents In NE Miami-Dade Neighboorhood Gather For Torah Dedication
NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) - A Northeast Miami-Dade neighborhood held a Torah dedication ceremony Monday afternoon, a show of unity in the wake of several crimes in the area.
It is Jewish tradition to celebrate publicly during a Torah dedication. Dozens gathered to play music and walked together to Torah Ve'emunah Shul, a temple that was spray painted with a swastika and the word "Hamas" a few weeks ago.
In a separate incident just a few blocks away, a swastika and an iron cross were etched into the back of a Rabbis car.
The Torah dedication also took place one week after Rabbi Joseph Raksin was gunned down while walking to a nearby temple for the Sabbath.
Police are still looking for the young two men who they believe are responsible and have been out patrolling area around the clock in a show force. Investigators say they are looking through some significant evidence including surveillance video.
The community says the crimes have put them on high alert but have also united them.
"Whenever there is grief and tragedy in the Jewish community, it doesn't leave our mind but nevertheless we have to, you know, post-Holocaust, post any tragedy, we have to live on so we have to constantly try to serve God out of happiness--even when one is sad, or in mourning, " said resident Yacov Younger.
