Miami-Dade police officer released from hospital after being shot by carjacking suspect
MIAMI – A police officer working a carjacking case in northwest Miami-Dade was shot while in his vehicle Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez said the Robbery Intervention Detail officer was conducting surveillance on a stolen black Volkswagen Jetta when the suspect turned it around and started firing.
The 34-year-old officer was airlifted to JMH Ryder Trauma Center after the incident in the area of 67th Avenue and NW 186 Street.
He suffered a graze wound to the face. During a press conference, Ramirez said the officer, a six-year veteran of the department, was alert and talking.
"Despite the injuries he sustained, that officer kept moving forward… he got on the radio, called it in, kept moving forward," Ramirez said. "In fact, speaking to him right now, 'I'm sorry, sir. I want to go right back out.' That's what he said."
The officer, who remains unidentified, has since been released from the hospital.
A person has been detained in the shooting, but authorities did not provide any additional details.
Live video from the scene showed several paramedics taking someone on a stretcher in order to transport them to a hospital by helicopter.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers (305) 471-TIPS (8477) or (866) 471-8477.
