MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- With Thanksgiving around the corner, travel is on the to do list for many people.

Of those, 47 million plan to hit the road for the holiday - driving - which remains the most popular method of travel, according to AAA.

But it won't be an easy drive in some areas.

The government reports 40 percent of road delays will be due to recurring bottlenecks - which is where traffic gets so congested, there is barely any movement.

Some South Florida highways have made the top 30 list when it comes to these congested points caused by pure volume of traffic.

CBS News reports a new analysis released by the American Highway Users Alliance lists the top 50.

In Miami, a 1.7 mile stretch of the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) - between 41st Street and the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) - made the list in the 20th spot.

The Dolphin Expressway between 72nd Avenue and Palmetto Expressway, came in at #32.  Another part of the expressway came in at #39 between 17th Ave and 22nd Avenue.

The report states the delays from these spots in South Florida add up to 1.4 million hours annually, costing the local economy approximately $30 million in lost time per year.

As for the rest of the U.S., Interstate 90 around Chicago O'Hare International Airport is considered the worst traffic bottleneck in the country with 16.9 million hours worth of delays.

Six of the top 10 worst bottlenecks are in Los Angeles.

The report recommends various approaches to fixing the bottleneck issue from a mix of mass transit to new roads to improvements in infrastructure.

But the bottom line is it will take a serious influx of investment to ease the bottleneck congestion issue.
