Recess Bill Mandating 20-Minute Breaks At School Set For House Committee

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) -- A new bill requiring 20-minute daily recess breaks for elementary school children is now on the agenda in the House.
Next week, a House K-12 Subcommittee will meet to discuss the Public School Recess bill (HB 833), mandating that kids keep active at school on a daily basis.
The bill calls for each district school board to provide 100 minutes of supervised, unstructured free-play each week for students in kindergarten through 5th grade, including 6th graders that attend schools with elementary grades.
The proposal piggybacks on an older bill that called for mandatory 30-minute physical education classes for middle school students that began in the 2009-2010 school year.
If approved, the Public School Recess bill would go into effect July 1, 2016.
