Professor With Cerebral Palsy In Need Of New Wheelchair

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - From the moment Corrinne Lockamy was born she was faced with many challenges.

"I was baptized named and read my rights all in 36 minutes," said Lockamy, who has Cerebral Palsy.

Her parents died when she was 22 then became homeless. But this strong-willed woman never let any of these obstacles get her way.

Lockamy managed to turn the negative events in her life into positive ones promising her father before he died that she would get a degree--and that she did.

Lockamy's passion is to help others any way she can. She is now a professor at Miami Dade College, a volunteer advisor and is also a student currently working on her PhD.

It's the simple things in life many of us take for granted that her greatest challenges.

"Get into an elevator sometimes I don't fit—in hallways. Sometimes I have to move things around at stores to get something and the owner will tell me you can't do that and they turn me away," said Lockamy.

Cerebral Palsy has made it difficult for Lockamy to move. She now gets around in a motorized scooter but it is big and hard to maneuver.

The 34-year-old is in desperate need of a motorized wheelchair. Lockamy even set up a website on www.gofundme.com to help raise money to buy one, but when her students found out, they stepped in and contacted CBS 4 to try to help.

"Nothing has been easy for her and I felt she helped other people so it's about time somebody helped her with her necessity. It's hard for her—somebody had to do it," said Leiny Ruiz a student.

Lockamy told CBS 4's Marybel Rodriguez that she is humbled by their reaction and she feels loved.

"By having a motorized wheelchair I will be able to become more of a person that I am to help others," said Lockamy.
