MIAMI (CBSMiami) – For the first time in 55 years, a sitting U.S. President touched down in Key West Thursday. Cheering supporters greeted President Donald Trump when he arrived at the Naval Air Station Key West aboard Air Force One.
During Mr. Trump's 2-hour visit, he took a tour of the Joint Interagency Task Force South which battles drug trafficking along with partner countries and agencies.
"This was an education. We're talking about drugs and stopping these drugs and other things, human trafficking and other forms of trafficking," said the President.
The president used his visit to also push his border wall, saying this is proof that it is needed.
"Drugs are flowing into our country. We need border protection, we need the wall, we have to have the wall. Democrats don't want to approve a wall because they think it's good politically, it's not," said President Trump. "Looking at what's happening in California with sanctuary cities where the people are really going the opposite way. They don't want sanctuary cities. And there's a little bit of a revolution going on in California," he said.
The President was greeted in the Southern most city with hundreds of people lining the streets along the 4-mile route. Some cheering him on while others protesting his presence.
Many in the gay and lesbian community as well as members of the Women's March lined the streets, too. Many held signs promoting Key West's slogan "One Human Family."
President Trump noticed the crowds.
"I hope you saw the crowds in Key West. You've never seen anything like that. It was really very inspirational. And what we just witnessed was incredible, but those crowds coming in, I think even the media will have to say that was quite something," said the President.
Trump has been at his Mar-a-Lago resort all week. On Monday, he attended a discussion in Hialeah on the Republican $1.5 trillion tax cut package, which he signed into law.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, he hosted Japan's Shinzo Abe and his wife. Over the course of the visit, Trump and Abe discussed the situation with North Korea and trade.
Mr. Trump is expected to stay in Palm Beach through the weekend.
