Student Stabbed At Piper High School In Sunrise

SUNRISE (CBSMiami) -- Sunrise Police are investigating a stabbing between two students at a Piper High School on Thursday.

It all happened at Piper High School located at 8000 NW 44th St. The school was on lock down for several hours earlier Thursday but has since reopened.

The lock down left many students scared, with a lot of questions.

"It was just scary when I heard about it," said fellow student Hunter Bernstein. "When I heard that someone got stabbed, I was really freaked out about it."

Police said the trouble began around 10:30 AM when a fight broke out between Kimanie King, 18, and Urique Wilson, 16, over a basketball game in the school's gym.

King, according to the Sunrise Police Department, left the gym, retrieved a knife and stabbed Wilson three times in the back and chest. The most serious wound is to the upper left chest area.

Romario Taffe was passing by the gym when the two began fighting.

"The kid who got stabbed he was beating him up first," said Taffe. "The other kid was on the floor and he got back up and he took something and knifed him in the chest right here," he said, pointing to his chest.

Wilson was transported to Broward Health where his parents raced to his side.

"I give praise to God every day because right now, he saved my son," said Joseph Watson, Wilson's father. "Without prayer and God in his life, he wouldn't be here today. It was one centimeter from his heart."

While Wilson is in stable condition.  His father said he's traumatized.

"He's terrified," said Watson.  "I mean imagine, he's 15-years old and he got stabbed. That's any parent's nightmare right there, to find out their kid is stabbed."

Watson said his son will likely be spending at least one night in the hospital.

Police said the weapon was a folding pocket knife approximately 5 inches in length when opened. The blade is approximately 2 ½ inches in length.

King is being charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

The stabbing comes after a brawl at the same high school last week, though the incidents police say are not related. One student ended up in the hospital.

"This is the second time this week....It's a nice school now, but I don't know with this. Things are happening everywhere," said Delmy Villera, a concerned parent.

Broward School Superintendent Robert Runcie is telling worried parents and students the attacks are not related and what happened Thursday was an isolated incident.

"We see no concern about the safety of our students at this school," said Runcie.  "There's no pattern, no concern for parents to draw any long term conclusions about Piper High School. It's a good school."

The stabbing came as schools from all over South Florida were at the school for an orchestra competition.

Tom Alberts drove from Coral Gables when he heard the news to check on his son.

"It was a half hour drive with a lot of trepidation," he said.  His son goes to Coral Reef High School and was at the school to compete.

"When I found out about it, your hearts's in your throat because there's a stabbing. You don't know who's stabbed, why it happened or how many people are involved."
