Portion of beach evacuated in Pompano after suspicious device found

MIAMI - The bomb squad is investigating after a suspicious device washed ashore in Pompano Beach.

Authorities had evacuated a portion of the beach just north of the Pompano Beach Pier after saying a US military container was found on the beach.

Here is what authorities said to CBS4:

"At approximately 3:24 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting a military item that washed ashore near 10 N Pompano Beach Boulevard in Pompano Beach. BSO Pompano Beach district deputies along with investigators from BSO's Bomb Squad Unit responded to the scene and secured the area."

Authorities said the preliminary investigation revealed the object is a military flare and that the U.S. Air Force will be responding to recover the item.

No additional information was released by authorities.
