Poppinga: "No Doubt" Dolphins Should Go After Evan Mathis
It's no secret that the Miami Dolphins biggest area in need of improvement and stability is the offensive line. Since Ryan Tannehill entered the NFL in 2012 no quarterback has been sacked more times than he has.
While three of the five spots on the Dolphins offensive line are occupied by very talented players (Branden Albert, Mike Pouncey and Ja'Wuan James), it's the two guard positions that are areas of concern.
Last week a Pro Bowl-caliber guard hit the open market when Evan Mathis was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles and former NFL linebacker Brady Poppinga thinks that the Dolphins should pursue him, but not to the point where he would have leverage.
"No doubt you go after [Mathis], but you don't go after him like he's this top tier, top priority free agent," Poppinga said on the Big O Show. "So, you let him sit. Whereas if you go after him right out of the gates here, where you don't really have to, he has more of the leverage. So, I say they go after him. I wouldn't be surprised if the first week into training camp [the Dolphins] end up signing Evan Mathis if he's still available."
