MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade Police are investigating a single-car accident that killed an 18-year-old and injured four others.

Nedian Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, he was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima eastbound along S.W. 62nd Street at a high rate of speed, when he lost control and crashed into a wall.

Family and friends of the victims arrived to see the car wedged between the wall and a tree.

"I wasn't expecting to see the car this bad," said Nancy Medina, a friend. "I got a call from my friend about like 20 minutes ago telling me that all our friends were in a nasty car accident and were rushed to the hospital."

Medina said the tragic phone call awoke her early Saturday morning.

"I usually don't get a call from one of my close friends at this time," she said. "I don't know, I wasn't expecting this."

Friends say Alvarez was getting ready to go back to college and his girlfriend was due to deliver their first child together.

Four others, Deandre Cabrali, Cesar Lizarzaburu, George Pong, and David Cuadros, all 18 years old, were inside the vehicle. They all needed to be extricated from the car by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and were taken to Kendall Regional Hospital.

They told one of the officers that alcohol was involved.

"One of the stable individuals did tell a uniformed officer at the hospital that they had been drinking prior to getting into the car," said MDPD Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. "And unfortunately, as this tragic accident takes the life of a young teenager just starting his life, we as a community have to learn from this."

One of the passengers was listed in critical condition. The three others were in stable condition.
