The girl and her mother 22-year-old Miryan Velasquez, who police were also searching for, were taken to the police department where they were then transported to the City of Miami Police Department to meet with a Department of Children and Families (DCF) worker.
DCF officials said the family has a case history in New Jersey, but not in Florida.
An official was scheduled to check on the child and mother every month. When the official checked the motel on Biscayne Boulevard this month, the child and the mother were gone which triggered the search.
"According to DCF guidelines mom must check in if she is moving from place to place. Mom may have some type of dependency issue. That is not something we are clear on, but that is why DCF has become involved in this case," said Kenia Fallat of Miami Police.
Police said the little girl's mother has not been charged with anything and that they don't expect to file any criminal charges.
