Police Search For Car Involved In Deadly Hit & Run
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) — Fort Lauderdale police are asking for the public's help to identify a car involved in a hit and run which killed a teen Sunday morning.
According to police, the car involved is described as an older model, dark-colored Jeep Cherokee possibly with tinted windows and a luggage rack. The vehicle may have damage to the right front side and/or windshield.
Police said it all happened at approximately 1:06 a.m. in the 2700 block of West Broward Boulevard.
The car was traveling westbound in the left lane of West Broward Boulevard, when Justin Flowers, 15, was crossing the street. As Flowers walked through the center westbound lane the car changed lanes, and struck him.
Family members and friends gathered Sunday to hold a vigil near the spot where Flowers was killed. "He was smart. He was funny, always trying to make people laugh," recalled Justin's sister Tatyana Flowers, 19.
Jermaine Jones, a cousin, added, "He loved basketball, he obeyed his mom followed Christ. He's involved in a lot of church activities."
After he was struck, Flowers was thrown to the ground, received life threatening injuries and later died. The car drove away and, according to police, continued to travel westbound on West Broward Boulevard until making a right turn onto State Road 7 to travel north.
"I just want to say if you've seen anything that happened to my little brother, please just come forward. If it was your little brother, you would want someone to come forward," said Tatyana Flowers, through tears. "I just want whoever who hurt my little brother to be behind bars or whatever consequences and punishment come their way come their way because this is not justice this isn't right."
Jones had a message for the driver: "Please have a heart. Turn yourself in. You kept going. If you don't know, it was a fifteen year old child and it's sad. Please turn yourself in."
