Police Investigating Threat Made Against Miramar School

MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) - There was a heavy police presence at Glades Middle School on Wednesday after someone made a threat against it online.

Investigators say a student received a text message from an unknown number claiming "I'm shooting up the school first period." A similar of the text spread like wildfire on social media, saying it would happen at 10 a.m.

Some students arriving at school Wednesday morning said they were a little anxious.

"I don't know why someone would say something like that and put people's lives at risk," said Marie Elizabeth.

"I just want everything to be okay, just hoping that it's just a joke or something," said student Jennifer Calixte.

Teachers too. Andrea Blackner said she was called in early for an emergency meeting.

"We are waiting to find out more about it, we know the police will be here to make sure that nothing happens," she said.

Extra officers were at the school today out of an abundance of caution.

One parent said she was afraid after her daughter lost a friend in the mass shooting last year at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland.

"It scares me because it should be a safe place for the kids to be in school," said Adeline Cleophat.

Some students were apparently unfazed by the whole situation.

"If it were real they wouldn't post it," said Zoey Witter.

Detectives are trying to determine the source of the text and whether the threat was credible, Miramar police said extra law enforcement was on hand Wednesday out of an abundance of caution.

"We want to stress that we take these threats very seriously," said police spokeswoman Tania Ruyes.
