Piece Of Concrete Falls Off Old Seven Mile Bridge

KEY WEST (CBSMiami) -- Parts of the historic seven mile bridge have fallen into the ocean making it dangerous for boaters near the area.

According to KeysInfoNet, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has placed danger buoys near sections of the overhang near mile marker 41.8 of US 1.

A U.S. Coast Guard official told the site, a chunk of the bridge has already fallen off and sunk into the ocean.

The press secretary for the DEP said the  department's Division of Recreation and Parks is not currently maintaining the bridge but they do monitor it for any issues.

An agreement is in place to restore the historic portion of the bridge but construction has not started.

A Department of Transportation official told the site construction on the bridge could start March 2016.
