Person dead, another detained by police after Miami efficiency fire

Police investigate deadly Miami efficiency fire

MIAMI — A person is dead and another has been detained by police after a Miami efficiency home went ablaze in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Just before 2 a.m., Miami Police and Fire Rescue were called out to a house fire at 3056 SW 13th St., where first responders found flames coming from an efficiency behind the home.

As soon as firefighters put out the flames, a dead body was recovered from inside the building, Miami-Dade Police told CBS News Miami.

One other person is currently being questioned by police as Miami-Dade Homicide detectives and Miami Fire's Investigation Unit work to figure out the circumstances surrounding the fire and death.

Neighbors are still digesting what happened. Sirens woke up Frank Dunbar in the middle of the night.

"When I looked out the windows I could see flames," Dunbar said.

The scene had been closed off for hours as police processed evidence.

"The flames were high when I looked out last night," he continued.

Though officials have not identified the victim, neighbors told CBS News Miami that the efficiency often gets rented out.

"It's always different people different cars parked, said neighbor Pablo Rodrigues. "We see people sometimes with their carry-ons get inside."

Alvaro Garcia got called to fix a neighbor's air conditioning before arriving at the scene. He'll likely have to come back another day.

"I don't think there's much that can be done it has to be respected," Garcia said.

Police have not said if they believe foul play is involved at this time.

"Hopefully, they can finish the investigation and find the cause of it," said neighbor Enrique Rubio.

"If there's foul play there should be justice for the person," added another neighbor Eduardo Paz.

Anyone with information should call Miami Police.
